DRIVING THE DREAM
A Program Overview

The goal of DRIVING THE DREAM MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION: LANGUAGE DRIVEN BELIEVING AND ACHIEVING is to provide teachers with multicultural based strategies and approaches to enhancing students’ ability to communicate in a manner which acknowledges, incorporates and encourages use of their own cultural styles (Banks, Cherry, Hale-Benson, Dandy, Smitherman-Donaldson).

DRIVING THE DREAM also uses aspects of Gardners’ Multiple Intelligences Theory to provide teachers with a repertoire of approaches to reaching children from a variety of cultural experiences. Teachers are provided a background in the cultural realities that impact the education of children from African and Latin descent, to better motivate students and assist in building both self-esteem and a capacity for literacy.

TRACI O'KELLY

Portrait of Traci O'Kelly
A Tribute to the Women of Song

G raceful and evocative stylings form an homage to the work of the singers she admires, but Ms. O’Kelly brings her own inimitable gifts of wit, timing and elegance to the table. Ms. O’Kelly has performed in clubs all over New York City, including such venues as Danny’s Skylight Room, Don’t Tell Mamma, Sweetwater’s, Upstairs at Greene Street and Triad.

The vocalist has created this program to introduce young people to the special contributions African-American women have made to popular and classical American music. Her presentation evokes the special stylings and period charm of these classic American singers from Bessie Smith to Ella Fitzgerald.
