Education

Dr. Baron, a former New York City public school teacher, earned her Master’s Degree in Reading and her Doctorate in Cross Categorical Studies from Columbia University’s Teachers College. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Teacher Education Department at York College, City University of New York (CUNY), in New York City. She teaches undergraduate courses in educational psychology; classroom evaluation and assessment; content area literacy, and human development. Her academic journal articles, and book chapters focus on literacy and the social and emotional intelligences; and culturally responsive, critical pedagogy.

Publishing and Harlin Jacque Publications

Dr. Lindamichelle Baron is the President and founder of Harlin Jacque Publications, a publishing and educational consulting firm established over three decades ago. As an author and poet, Lindamichellebaron’s (her pen name) books include: The Sun Is On (listed as a recommended book for New York State middle schools), Rhythm & Dues, and For the Love of Life. The innovative Poetry & Ideas Book Series, published by Harlin Jacque Publications, is Lindamichellebaron’s written invitation to international audiences. She invites all to become empowered, achieve, grow, resolve conflicts, love themselves, and love others. Her “idea” books support her creative messages and provide self-reflective “how to” activity guides for life and learning. They include writing exercises that support goal achievement and higher order thinking strategies.

Books and Consulting

Dr. Baron’s innovative and expanding educational enrichment program, “Driving the Dream: Literacy and the Arts,” has been implemented in educational systems across the country. Dr. Baron is also coauthor of The Write Direction (Modern Curriculum Press/Pearson Learning), an instructional writing textbook series for elementary through middle school students, published in 1999. Her poems have been featured in a number of poetry anthologies as well as on stage, in productions such as When Hell Freezes Over, I’ll Skate, an off-Broadway production conceived and directed by the renowned Vinnette Carol; and the East Rivers Players, Brooklyn Academy of Music production of North Star Shining. Recently, local theater and dance companies produced The Wonder of Lindamichellebaron at Black Spectrum Theatre and The Groove that Got the Move of Us presented at Hofstra University.

Family and Background

Born in Queens, New York, Dr. Baron is the daughter of Dorothy Nightingale Baron, a model and entrepreneur in fashion retail and the late Herman Baron, a minister with numerous other interests and talents, being the first successful African-American car salesmen in the New York City area as well as a talented amateur artist, songwriter and public advocate. Lindamichelle Baron’s formative years included acting and playwriting as well as poetry and publishing.

Awards and Honors

Dr. Baron is a motivational speaker and consultant who speaks before a wide variety of audiences at colleges, conferences, corporations and other organizations including public school systems, to share her positive approaches to both academic achievement and personal growth. She artfully weaves a wide range of instructional and inspirational styles that create interactive experiences for adults and children of all ages. She has received numerous awards as educator, literary exemplar, such as as "Outstanding Educator Award" from the Middle School Principals Association of New York City; 25 Influential Black Women in Business by The Network Journal, and hometown village of Hempstead, has honored her with the official designation of Village Griot (storyteller).
